Funeral For A Friend - Hours

July 2005

Atlantic Records

UK emo band Funeral For a Friend has been around for many years, just not known in the United States. They got a considerable following in the United States, after playing the east coast portion of Taking Back Sunday’s headlining tour last year. The release of Funeral for A Friends sophomore album “Hours” in July was the bands first proper album, as the last album ‘Casually Dressed & Deep In Conversation’ was considered with indulgent affection, but ultimately considered its collection of songs from throughout their career to date, a disjointed set of old favorites and newer material. “Hours” was produced in Seattle, Washington by Terry Date, who is known for his work with famous bands like Soundgarden, Pantera, The Deftones and Limp Bizkit. The theme of the album is that confidence allows you to grow as a person. This album also shows how much the band has grown in terms of songwriting and musicianship. Their debut single “Streetcars” is a standout song on this album. The song is about how people change over time. In the middle of the song a guy is talking to a girl on the phone about their relationship going bad. The song "Hospitality" is about a near death experience by vocalist Matt Davies.

Sample lyric: So pull this switch and see my body twitch, as we dance on this memory.
Despair has devoured me whole; a seed won’t grow from this soul.

The 5th song on the album "Drive On" is about remembering a past relationship with someone. The other big hit on this album is "Roses for the Dead" about losing a close friend. Amazing song, just brilliant lyrics like: So raise your hands up high and let this rain pour on
So raise your hands up high and wash us away

This album is less screamy and the band even recorded a few ballads such as "Sonny". Funeral for a Friend is a superb band and just wonderful live. So I suggest you pick up "Hours" next time your at the record store.
